"A recent survey showed that 51% of corporations said that security was the main concern about cloud computing." (citation)
Arthur Coviello, Executive vice president of EMC Corp., recently held a keynote at the RSA conference in San Fransisco. The RSA conference is where leaders in the IT industry come and discuss security issues that face the IT world today. And EMC Corp. is a company who focuses on innovating ways to store, protect, optimize, and leverage information. Coviello urged his peers to continue to innovate better ways of protecting client's information as computing starts to go virtual.
Today, there are many ways to keep your information secure. The traditional way is to house it on a machine locally. This adds peace of mind that only you have access to it, but adds a lot of problems with hard drive crashes, needing to backup constantly, and in some cases theft, flood and fire are all cause for concern. When information is sent to the cloud, these issues are no longer large concerns; but, peace of mind knowing that only you have access to the information decreases. This is where EMC Corp. is trying to help consumers.
Chuck Hollis of EMC talks in a video on their site about how the industry is starting to go away from the traditional way of computing and towards the cloud, but this makes people uneasy as they are use to seeing and touching the technology (video timecode 2:00). But, as time goes on and people start to use the cloud, faith in its security will increase.
Even with traditional computing models (having your computer in house) security has always been an issue and is continually being made better. The same goes for the cloud, and today it is secure. With HIPAA compliancy and advanced firewalls in place, all information is secure on the servers and can only be accessed by the person with the password. This is a service that eMerging Cloud offers.
